A young man’s ‘fascination with driving’ landed him with his eighth and ninth convictions for driving without insurance at Tralee District Court on Wednesday.

Adeel Nawaz (20) of Castletreasure Grove, Castletreasure, Douglas, Cork had 24 previous convictions, including seven for driving without insurance.

On Wednesday, he also faced charges for driving without a licence on November 26, 2025 at Clash West Tralee and for failure to display L plates, driving unaccompanied and failure to wear a seatbelt at Quill Street, Cloonmore on May 1, 2024.

“He’s a 21-year-old lad that appears to have a fascination with driving,” said his solicitor Pat Mann.

His client had since had no trouble with the law. “Nothing at all in the meantime,” noted the solicitor.

He suggested the probation services could help Mr Nawaz on a fundamental level. “I feel there’s something else going on here that the probation service could get,” he said.

Judge David Waters said he would likely give a jail sentence.

Although he sought justification to lighten the penalty, he noted the courts had “tried everything”, including fines, community service and suspended sentences.

“There comes a time where you have to be consistent,” said Judge Waters. “This is this man’s ninth time now.”

He adjourned the case for sentencing to March 4 to allow for a probation report to be completed.

“I’m not doing this by way of giving him a fright,” said the judge. “I’ll almost certainly be giving a jail sentence. His mother is there wringing her hands and crying, and it’s because of this behaviour.”
