Verbally abusive dad had mixed alcohol with seizure medication, court hears

By Eimear Cotter, Independent.ie

A dad-of-three who verbally abused staff at a GAA club bar had mixed alcohol with medication he takes for seizures, a court heard.

Hugh Nevin (27) knew that drinking on top of his medication “did not agree with him” and he was very sorry for his behaviour, his solicitor said.

Judge Shalom Binchy imposed a one-month sentence suspended for 18 months.

The defendant, with an address at Oak Park in Portlaoise, Co Laois, admitted public drunkenness and threatening and abusive behaviour on December 6, 2025.

Sgt Griffin said Nevin was verbally abusive to bar staff and patrons

Sergeant Shane Griffin told Balbriggan District Court that gardaí were called to Fingallians GAA Club in Swords following reports of a highly intoxicated male.

Sgt Griffin said Nevin was verbally abusive to bar staff and patrons at the venue. Nevin had since apologised for his behaviour.

Defence solicitor Paul Molloy said Nevin, a married father, suffered from anxiety and depression and was also on medication, as he has seizures.

Nevin knew drinking with medication did not agree with him and was no longer drinking. Mr Molloy asked the judge to be lenient, saying Nevin was ashamed and knew his behaviour was wrong.
