Uninsured biker ‘was trying to fix up scrambler for his friend’

A trainee carpenter caught on a scrambler bike outside his house had been trying to fix it up for his friend, a court heard.
Jack Symes (21) was fined €500 by Judge Stephanie Coggans, but she did not ban him from driving.
The defendant admitted uninsured driving near his home at St Cronan’s Avenue in Swords on October 15, 2023.
Balbriggan District Court heard that gardaí were on mobile patrol on October 15, 2023, when they spotted the defendant on a scrambler bike.
Gardaí stopped the defendant, who admitted he did not have insurance for the bike, which was seized.
The court heard that the defendant had no previous convictions.
Defence solicitor Paul Molloy said Symes was only 18 at the time of this incident. The defendant was “handy” with mechanics and was “tricking around with the bike outside his own front door”.
The bike, which belonged to Symes’ friend, was barely roadworthy, the court heard.
Symes, who was now training to be a carpenter, was sorry for the incident, and had learnt a valuable lesson, Mr Molloy added.
