Tyrone man fined after launching tirade of abuse at Donegal Gardai

By Chris McNulty, Donegal Daily

A County Tyrone man who became abusive to Gardai in Donegal and failed to take up the chance of an adult caution has been fined in court.

Letterkenny District Court heard the case of Gabriel Kelly, a 52-year-old with an address at Glenside, Omagh.

Garda Declan Roper told the court that he was assisting the Roads Policing Unit with a traffic stop on June 8, 2025.

A passenger, Kelly, exited the vehicle and became abusive to Gardai.

Garda Roper recalled how Kelly was “highly intoxicated” and was calling officers “Free State bastards” and “w*****s”.

Garda Roper said he arrested Kelly at 12.40am as he was a danger to himself and others.

Once cautioned, Kelly made no reply.

The accused man was placed in the rear of a patrol car in handcuffs and brought to Letterkenny Garda Station. An adult caution was applied, but Kelly failed to attend an appointment and a summons was issued.

Kelly was not present and was not represented in court.

Judge Emile Daly convicted Kelly and fined him €300, giving four months to pay.
