Two men refused bail following series of early morning incidents in Louth

By Francis Carroll, Irish Independent

Two men have appeared in court following a series of incidents in the Drogheda area during the early hours of Thursday.

Michael Ward (26), Kimmage, Manor Way, Whitehall Road, Dublin 12, and Keith Brady (21), Cushlawn Close, Tallaght, Dublin 24, were brought before Ardee District Court on Friday.

They are each charged with a burglary of €7,300 cigarettes and alcohol at Daybreak, Donore Road, Drogheda; robbery of €600 cash and a quantity of cigarettes at Maxol, Donore Road; burglary at Little Naples Pizza, Main Street, Duleek; attempted burglary at Foley’s Pub, Trinity Street, Drogheda; criminal damage at King’s Barbershop, Trinity Street; and possessing a stolen white Volkswagen ID-4 at the R152, Prioryland, Duleek; all on April 9 last.

Mr Ward is further accused of burglary and trespess at Abbey Road, Duleek, on the same date.

The court heard of the arrest charge and caution of both men at Ashbourne Garda Station on Friday. Neither made any reply after caution.

During separate contested bail applications, gardaí gave evidence that it will be alleged that the offending occurred between 4.55am and 8.30am on Friday when three men drove about in a stolen white Volkswagen ID-4.

At Maxol, Donore Road, it will be alleged that at 6.33am one of the men crawled under a shutter as staff were setting up to open at 7am and that this man grabbed and “herded” two female employes into a corner before the other two came in and stole multiple items, including cigarettes.

Both women were in fear throughout, one of them suffering a panic attack.

Fire extinguishers were allegedly used to break into Little Naples Pizza in Duleek and Foley’s Bar in Drogheda.

Gardaí added that there was a likelihood of further charges.

Judge Nicola Andrews refused bail in each case and remanded the defendants in custody to Drogheda Court on April 13.
