Two cousins receive suspended sentences for sexual assault

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Two cousins received fully suspended sentences at the Central Criminal Court for sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl. The proceedings were reported on 21 October 2024.

Ms Justice Caroline Biggs sentenced the younger man to 18 months and the older man to three years, suspending both sentences in full. Both men were ordered to take part in victim-focused and sexual-offending courses and to confirm that their wives and other family members had been told about the crime.

A jury convicted both men of sexually assaulting the girl on 11 July 2020. The younger man was acquitted of one count of attempted rape. Both men had expressed remorse and accepted the verdicts, while the judge considered their young ages, upbringing and Probation Services reports that neither was likely to reoffend.
