Trial begins of man alleged to have shot at family home in Limerick

By Brídín Ní Fhearraigh-Joyce, Limerick Leader

Liam Casey, 43, with an address at Hyde Road, Prospect, is contesting the charge of possessing a firearm with the intent to endanger life and / or cause serious injury to property at a house at Meagher Close in the early hours of November 8, 2024.

Prosecuting Barrister for the State John O’Sullivan said in his opening remarks to the jury that six members of the family were at home at the time of the shooting.

Mr O’Sullivan said a gunman tapped the door to the home four times with a shotgun, and then discharged two shots.

“These shots could have hit anyone drawn to open the door,” he said.

Detective Garda Elaine Cusack of Henry Street garda station took to the stand to give evidence. Det Cusack said that when she attended the suspected crime scene, there were two bullet holes at the door of the house.

A resident who was at home at the time of the alleged shooting then gave evidence to the court.

“There were gun shots, he shot right up the stairs,” she said. The witness told the court that her grandchild was asleep at the time of the alleged shooting.

The woman said through tears: “I am still frightened to this day. I can’t sleep”.

Another resident of the home gave evidence of the alleged shooting in the court.

“I thought I was going to be killed,” he said.

“There was only two feet between me and the door.”

The trial is expected to continue until Friday. Liam Casey’s defence, BL Mark Nicholas and BL Yvonne Quinn, will go on to cross-examine witnesses and argue the man’s case to the jury.
