Trevor Shaw awarded €30,000 for unfair dismissal

By Rory Hanlon

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Trevor Shaw was awarded €30,000 for unfair dismissal by the Workplace Relations Commission, reported on 19 April 2024.

The WRC found that the Department of Agriculture acted unreasonably in dismissing Shaw without consultation or an appeal. The dismissal took effect on Christmas Day 2022, after the Department said the ministerial driving role was no longer required following a security decision that regular Cabinet attendees must have Garda drivers.

The compensation is in addition to redundancy and an ex-gratia payment Shaw had already received. The WRC cited the employer’s conduct and Shaw’s insufficient efforts to limit his financial loss when setting the award.
