Tomas Gajowniczek sent to hospital after attempted murder verdict

By Niamh Kearney

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Tomas Gajowniczek was found not guilty by reason of insanity of attempting to murder his former partner, Alicja Kalinowska. The same verdict was returned on a charge of intentionally or recklessly causing her serious harm.

The charges concerned an attack at their Dublin home on 16 June 2016. The proceedings were reported on 9 May 2018.

The jury accepted defence psychiatric evidence that Gajowniczek had a delusional disorder at the time of the attack.

Justice Patrick McCarthy committed him to the Central Mental Hospital for ongoing treatment. His treatment will be continuously reviewed, and he could be released in future if recommended by his treating doctors.
