A 37-year-old Tipperary man was jailed for five years after pleading guilty to sexually abusing a young neighbour when he was a teenager. He cannot be identified to protect the injured party. The abuse took place between 1999 and 2002, when the victim was aged four to eight and the accused was aged 13 to 17.
Sentencing, Ms Justice Mary Ellen Ring said the court had to take account of the accused’s age at the time of the offences. She imposed concurrent sentences totalling five years and ordered 18 months of post-release supervision. The judge also noted that the guilty plea came late and that the victim had expected for two years, until late 2022, that he would have to give evidence.
