Thomas "Slab" Murphy has pleaded not guilty to nine tax charges.

The charges allege that he failed to furnish a return of his income, profits or gains, or their source, to the Collector General or Inspector of Taxes for the years 1996/97 to 2004.

The Special Criminal Court trial heard evidence concerning a Criminal Assets Bureau (CAB) forensic accountant’s analysis on 3 November 2015. The proceedings were reported on 3 November 2015.

Mr Murphy was being prosecuted following a CAB investigation. The prosecution’s case was that he conducted significant dealings in cattle and land and received farming grants from the Department of Agriculture, but failed to make any returns to the Revenue.

The accountant, who could not be named for legal reasons, told John Kearney QC, defending, that he analysed a bank account opened in the name of Thomas Murphy and documents found in a shed during a CAB search.

The trial heard that the accountant conducted an objective analysis of the documents found in the shed on the Border. He said examination of the documents “leads to its own conclusion”. The trial was continuing.
