Thomas 'Slab' Murphy was found guilty of nine tax-evasion charges by the Special Criminal Court on 17 December 2015. The charges concerned failures to furnish tax returns on income from cattle farming between 1996 and 2004. Murphy, of Ballybinaby, Hackballscross, County Louth, was remanded on bail pending sentencing.
The three-judge court rejected his defence that his brother controlled the farming activity. The trial heard that Murphy had traded more than €370,000 worth of cattle over five years and received more than €100,000 in farming grants over eight years. He was prosecuted following an investigation by the Criminal Assets Bureau.
