The student’s blackmail claim account disabled by Meta

By Rory Hanlon

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

The student’s High Court proceedings over alleged Instagram blackmail claims remained unresolved after Meta disabled the account complained of. The court was told that an investigation found the account had been compromised and was being operated by an unnamed third party. Mr Justice Brian O'Moore had granted permission to serve notice of the injunction application on Meta.

The student sought orders concerning alleged altered sexualised images and demands for payment. Counsel accepted that Meta’s response had reduced the force of the action, but the judge adjourned the proceedings for a week so the student could consider it. The proceedings were reported on 8 May 2023.
