An unnamed teenage boy received a two-year detention sentence, suspended for one year, at the Central Criminal Court, as reported on 23 May 2022. The sexual assault took place in a field in Co Tipperary on 29 July 2019.

The boy, then 15, pleaded guilty and had no other criminal convictions. The judge treated the offence’s seriousness, breach of trust and effect on the complainant as aggravating factors, while citing his co-operation, early plea, remorse, good character and youth diversion engagement in mitigation.

Conditions included probation appointments, further participation in the diversion programme and any consent awareness course recommended by his probation officer. The court also ordered him to stay away from the complainant.
