This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

A teenage boy with special needs secured an interim school place after High Court proceedings were resolved, a development reported on 14 December 2023.

The boy, whose identity is withheld for legal reasons, had been unable to find a placement suited to his health and educational needs. His mother brought the judicial review proceedings on his behalf against the Minister for Education and Skills, the National Council for Special Education, Ireland and the Attorney General.

His counsel told the court that discussions between the parties had produced the interim place. The court heard it was hoped that a more suitable permanent placement at a more geographically convenient location could be identified in the future.

The judge welcomed the settlement. The report also recounted that the boy had been placed in a residential setting because his family could not manage his behaviour at home. While the setting had worked very well for him, his mother claimed it was not meeting his educational needs.
