Siobhán McCoy awarded €10,000 for discrimination

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Siobhán McCoy was awarded €10,000 by the Workplace Relations Commission for gender-based discrimination after her detective-post interview, as reported on 28 July 2023. The complaint concerned An Garda Siochána’s interview process in August 2020, when McCoy was 36 weeks pregnant. The WRC found the process flawed, citing undue emphasis on interview performance, possible manipulation of marks and the absence of an independent panel member. Adjudicating officer Catherine Byrne upheld the complaint and ordered the force to pay compensation. The State denied the complaint. McCoy also accepted that an incident-room course was not part of the detective role profile.
