Simon Gold faced 22 charges, including theft, deception, money laundering and the use and possession of false instruments. He denied the charges.

The proceedings were reported on 16 May 2019. The report was updated on 17 May 2019.

The jury was told the case involved five alleged victims. Prosecuting counsel Lorcan Staines said four Irish men were deceived into transferring money in the belief that it would secure larger loans. The jury heard that the loans never materialised. The prosecution alleged that Gold operated under several names.

The report said a Danish businessman had agreed to lodge €1.6 million on the promise of a monthly return. Mr Staines said the money was paid into an account opened by the accused and that €678,000 was transferred to various accounts before the bank froze it.

The trial continued before Judge Martin Nolan.
