Shaun Groome's appeal against a 15-year sentence for assault causing serious harm was dismissed by the Court of Appeal on 30 January 2023.
The sentence related to an attack in Rhode, County Offaly, in which the injured party suffered 16 stab wounds and burns covering 96% of his body. Criminal damage by arson was taken into consideration.
The court rejected arguments that the guilty plea, mitigation and rehabilitation prospects should have led to a greater reduction or a suspended portion of the sentence. It also found that Groome had played a greater role than his juvenile co-accused.
