Seven migrant fishermen win redundancy claims at WRC

By Ruairí Dolan

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Seven migrant fishermen won statutory redundancy claims before the Workplace Relations Commission, with decisions published on 19 March 2024. The WRC ordered Millbay Fishing Company Ltd to pay them a combined €42,000 after adjudicator Jim Dolan found their complaints well-founded.

The company had argued it was unfair to pay statutory redundancy in addition to compensation under the Brexit scrappage scheme. The ruling found no reference in the scheme guidelines stating that those payments replaced redundancy entitlements.

The fishermen had worked aboard the St Clair and the St Rose, which Millbay received €2,005,885 to decommission in 2022. The report said €42,550 was sought, while the combined award was €42,000.
