Seven Ghanaian fishermen won statutory redundancy claims at the Workplace Relations Commission, in decisions reported on 19 March 2024. The WRC found that payments under the fishing fleet decommissioning scheme did not replace their redundancy entitlements.
The fishermen had worked aboard the St Clair and St Rose trawlers, which Millbay Fishing Company Ltd decommissioned under the Brexit Voluntary Permanent Cessation Scheme. The WRC ordered the company to pay each man statutory redundancy, totalling €42,000.
