Sean Gallagher's RTÉ document case heard in High Court
This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.
Sean Gallagher’s application for documents in his RTÉ Tweetgate legal action was heard in the High Court on 1 May 2014. The dispute concerns the scope of discovery sought about an October 2011 Frontline presidential debate.
His lawyers sought records covering the debate through November 2012, including material linked to the disputed Twitter account, RTÉ verification procedures and an internal review. RTÉ argued the request was too broad and costly.
Mr Justice Paul Gilligan reserved his decision after submissions and said he would rule at a later date. The case includes claims that the broadcast was unfair and damaged Mr Gallagher’s electoral prospects, which RTÉ denies.
This report covers an earlier stage of the case. Later developments are not reported here.
