Sean Feehan challenges Skellig Michael permit revocation

By Fionn Kelly

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Sean Feehan challenged the revocation of his Skellig Michael landing permits in the High Court, reported on 13 April 2016. The permits allowed him to land visitors at the UNESCO world heritage site off the coast of Co Kerry.

The Office of Public Works revoked his two permits after he pleaded guilty at Caherciveen District Court in September 2015 to three Merchant Shipping Act offences. Feehan claimed the decision was unfair, invalid, unlawful and in breach of his constitutional rights, while the OPW cited safety concerns.

Mr Justice Paul Gilligan granted a temporary injunction preventing the OPW from issuing two of four tendered permits to other parties while the legal challenge proceeded.

This report covers an earlier stage of the case. Later developments are not reported here.
