This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Sammy Hutch was jailed for six years for possessing an improvised pipe bomb, with the term ordered to run consecutively to his robbery sentence. Judge Patricia Ryan set a nine-year headline term and reduced it to six years, citing the device’s nature and the allegation that he held it for an unlawful purpose as aggravating factors.

Hutch pleaded guilty during his Dublin Circuit Criminal Court trial to possessing an explosive device at his Finglas home in the early hours of April 30, 2024. He was already serving a six-and-a-half-year sentence for robbery, with a release date of April 2029, and had 103 previous convictions.

The device was found in a bag after gardaí approached Hutch, who had been crouching behind trees with a backpack. The court heard that the Defence Forces were called to disable it and the garda station was evacuated. The sentencing report also said the court heard that Hutch’s phone contained messages to an accomplice about the bomb. His defence lawyer said he was not involved in gangland activity.
