Russian teenager awarded €1,500 for racial discrimination

By Gráinne Nolan

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

The unnamed Russian teenager was awarded €1,500 for racial discrimination by the Workplace Relations Commission, reported on 25 July 2023. The decision ordered the camp organisers to offer her a free place on its 2024 summer course and cover travel costs up to €1,200.

If she declined the place, the organisers were ordered to pay a further €1,500 in compensation. She had 30 days to choose between the course place and that payment.

The adjudicator found no basis for the organisers’ claim that sanctions against Russia prevented them accepting her booking. The decision also found no evidence that other children would create difficulties for her solely because she was Russian.

The WRC ruled that refusing her a place breached the Equal Status Act.
