A jury convicted Ross Outram of murdering 90-year-old Paddy Lyons, a retired farmer found beaten to death at his home. The proceedings were reported on 8 March 2019.

Outram, of Ferryland, Waterford Road, Clonmel, County Tipperary, had pleaded not guilty to murdering Lyons at Loughleagh, Ballysaggart, Lismore, County Waterford, at an unknown time between 23 and 26 February 2017.

The jury rejected Outram’s claim that he repeatedly struck Lyons in self-defence and returned a unanimous verdict after three hours and 29 minutes. Outram had told gardaí that he fought back after Lyons hit him with a walking stick and shovel, and that he had taken up to 100 Xanax that day. A pharmaceutical expert told the jury there was no proof he had taken Xanax.

Defence counsel Michael O’Higgins SC argued that Outram could not be liable for a fall in which Lyons broke his hip if it was unconnected to the original injuries. Prosecution counsel John O'Kelly SC said there was no evidence that the hip injury happened later or was separate from the attack.

Mr Justice Paul Coffey told the jury that, to convict Outram of murder, it had to be satisfied beyond reasonable doubt that the fall and hip fracture were directly caused by the blows or were a reasonably foreseeable natural consequence of them.
