Robert Maxwell sentenced for endangerment after appeal

By Eimear Byrne

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Robert Maxwell was sentenced to four years for endangerment, with the final two years suspended, by the Court of Appeal on 11 March 2020. The offence happened at Yewstown Estate, Nenagh, County Tipperary, during the night of 6 to 7 August 2017, when he drove a van into Simon Ryan and then drove at him again. Maxwell had pleaded guilty to endangerment, while four public order charges were taken into consideration.

The Court of Appeal found that suspending the original four-year sentence in full was unduly lenient and quashed it. It imposed a four-year sentence, suspending the final two years for two years, after considering Maxwell’s guilty plea and other mitigating factors.
