Recruitment scam warning issued by An Garda Síochána Wicklow
The Wicklow PeopleAn Garda Síochána Wicklow is warning the public to be on alert for a rise in sophisticated recruitment scams, where fraudsters pose as legitimate employers to steal money and personal information from jobseekers.
Scammers are advertising fake job vacancies on well-known recruitment websites and often use the names and branding of genuine companies to make the roles appear legitimate.
Applicants may even be invited to what appears to be a genuine interview before being targeted.
Victims may then be asked to provide copies of passports or driving licences, share banking details, pay fees for equipment, training or background checks, purchase equipment with promises of reimbursement, or even transfer money through their own bank accounts on behalf of the “employer”.
However, gardaí stress that legitimate employers will not pressure applicants into making payments or transferring money as part of a genuine recruitment process.
Members of the public are urged to independently verify any company offering a position by contacting it directly using details from its official website. Gardaí also advise people to be cautious if communication quickly moves from official email addresses to WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal or other messaging apps.
Gardaí warn that people should also watch for subtle differences in email addresses, research companies independently and be wary of job offers with unusually attractive salaries or benefits.
Any request that creates a sense of urgency should also be treated with suspicion.
Anyone who believes they have been targeted should immediately stop communicating with the suspected fraudster, avoid sending any further money or personal information, contact their bank if financial details have been shared, preserve all emails, messages and payment records, and report the matter to their local Garda station.
County Wicklow has 17 garda stations, located in Arklow, Ashford, Aughrim, Avoca, Baltinglass, Blessington, Bray, Carnew, Dunlavin, Enniskerry, Greystones, Newtownmountkennedy, Rathdrum, Roundwood, Shillelagh, Tinahely and Wicklow Town. Bray serves as the divisional headquarters, while Baltinglass and Wicklow Town also operate as district headquarters.
Director of Public Prosecutions figures show that 30 theft and fraud cases were sent forward for trial on indictment before Wicklow Circuit Criminal Court, which has greater sentencing powers, while a further six theft and fraud cases were dealt with summarily before the District Court during 2025.
These figures highlighted the continued volume of fraud-related offending before the courts.
An Garda Síochána is reminding the public to never use their personal bank account to receive or transfer money on behalf of an employer or someone they do not know.
