Raymond Quinn received a three-year sentence, suspended for three years, at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court for stealing money from his mother and taking her credit card. Judge Mary Ellen Ring ordered him to repay €8 a week for three years. The proceedings were reported on 19 February 2015.
Quinn pleaded guilty to six sample charges of stealing money from Amy Quinn and one charge of stealing her credit card. The money thefts occurred at AIB banks in Blessington and Naas and Ulster Bank in Blessington between 2 August and 31 October 2012. The credit card theft took place at Brittas, Co Dublin, on 6 August 2012.
Garda Mark Shortt said the unauthorised transactions totalled €14,153. Quinn admitted in interview to €9,480 in unauthorised credit card transactions and disputed the higher amount of over €14,000.
Aidan McCarthy, defending, submitted that Quinn had paid some private debts with his mother’s credit card. He said Quinn deeply regretted his actions and had acted in a misguided attempt to balance what he saw as an ongoing dispute.
The judge noted a huge breach of trust and said Quinn had only proposed repayment late in the case. The court heard that his mother was in a nursing home and had dementia.
