A professor of education who fled conflict in Gaza has been fined, after admitting driving a vehicle without insurance or valid motor tax

Muhamed Unber (59), of Kippure Lodge Holiday Village, Blessington, pleaded guilty at a sitting of Bray District Court to one count of having no insurance and no valid motor tax.

Sergeant Mick Dee told the court that on December 27, 2025, at Old Military Road, Blessington, the accused was stopped at a checkpoint while driving a 2008 Toyota hatchback without valid documentation.

The court was told that Mr Unber had taken the car on a test drive before being stopped, with the vehicle subsequently seized at the scene.

Solicitor for the defendant, Michael O’Connor, told the court that his client is a professor with a PhD in Education and had fled Palestine following the conflict with Israel.

He added that the vehicle had been taken from a garage and that his client believed insurance was in place. Counsel further stated that Mr Unber is currently unable to drive due to sciatica.

Judge Andy Gubbins fined the accused €100.
