Primary school wins challenge over special-needs enrolment

A primary school won a High Court challenge over a direction to enrol a child in a special-needs class on 14 November 2017.
The school had received 17 applications for three places in its speech and language class. After her child was refused a place, the child’s mother appealed the decision.
Mr Justice Paul Coffey quashed the appeals committee’s recommendation and directed that the matter be heard by a differently constituted committee. He found the school’s admissions policy did not set criteria for oversubscription, and that the committee’s recommendation was unfair to other unsuccessful applicants.
