Peter Pringle’s State damages actions struck out

By Cathal Brosnan

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Peter Pringle’s two actions against the State were struck out by the High Court before Mr Justice Rory Mulcahy on 15 June 2023, after his death and because no family member wished to continue them. No orders were made on the legal costs of the High Court actions.

Pringle had been convicted of murdering gardaí John Morley and Henry Byrne in 1980, but the convictions were quashed in 1995 after he spent 14 years and 10 months in prison. The Court of Appeal had set aside an earlier dismissal of his damages claim and sent it back to the High Court for fresh consideration in a ruling reported on 18 May 2022.
