Paul Collopy sentenced for money laundering at Ennis court

By Cathal Brosnan

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Paul Collopy was sentenced to five years and four months for money laundering at Ennis Circuit Court, reported on 1 November 2023.

The sentence related to €16,695 recovered from a disused car at Carnelly House, near Clarecastle, on 24 November 2020. Gardaí linked Collopy to a clear bag containing some of the cash through DNA evidence.

Judge Francis Comerford said he was satisfied the money was connected to drug seizures at the same location and had been generated by drug dealing. Collopy's counsel maintained that the drugs had nothing to do with his client.

The 64-month term was ordered to run concurrently with a ten-year sentence Collopy was already serving, so the money laundering sentence added no jail time. He was due for release from that sentence in 2028, according to the report.

This report covers an earlier stage of the case. Later developments are not reported here.
