Patrick Ryan was sentenced to seven years, with the final two years suspended, at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court for assault, threats to kill and theft. The proceedings were reported on 7 November 2014.
Ryan pleaded guilty to assaulting James Mountaine and Sally Mountaine, threats to kill and stealing US$4,000 and jewellery. The offences occurred during a masked raid on the couple’s home at Ashfield, Templeogue, on 3 February 2010. Judge Patricia Ryan said the threat to set the woman on fire was an aggravating factor.
Ryan had 38 previous convictions. Mr O’Brien said his client’s guilty plea demonstrated remorse. He said Ryan had no exit strategy from the raid and described his behaviour when caught by gardaí as “completely amateurish”.
