Patrick Quirke’s Supreme Court appeal against his murder conviction was joined by the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission (IHREC) as a participant at a case management hearing on 6 October 2022.
The court agreed that IHREC could take part as an amicus curiae, or friend of the court, and make legal submissions on one of the two issues under consideration. The appeal concerns the validity of a search warrant used in the murder investigation and the Director of Public Prosecutions’ discretion in calling an expert witness.
The appeal was scheduled for a one-day hearing on 25 October. The report said IHREC’s participation was not expected to lengthen the hearing.
