Oliver Doran jailed for life for Kwok Ping Cheng murder

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Oliver Doran was sentenced to life imprisonment for murdering Kwok Ping Cheng at the Central Criminal Court on 8 May 2023. The murder took place at Cheng’s sheltered accommodation in Robinson’s Court, Cork Street, Dublin, in April 2021.

Doran had initially pleaded not guilty, then changed his plea to guilty after his trial began in January. The court heard that he entered Cheng’s home twice on the night of 28–29 April 2021, and that Cheng died from blood loss caused by multiple injuries.

Justice David Keane said the murder was senseless and that he was required to impose life imprisonment. He backdated the sentence to 17 January 2023, when Doran entered his guilty plea.

A probation report raised concerns about Doran’s propensity for violence and reoffending, his peer associations, addiction history and lack of structure in his life. The judge also noted that Doran had fled the State and returned shortly afterwards.
