Niall Counihan was sentenced to three years in prison by the Court of Appeal on 24 March 2015 after convictions for two rapes and two sexual assaults.

The offences involved his wife's sister, who was aged 13 and 14 when she was babysitting. The court found the original wholly suspended sentence unduly lenient and reduced the sentence after considering the circumstances of the family and the seriousness of the offending.
