Neilus Cooney was sentenced to three years in prison, with the final six months suspended, at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on 2 November 2023 for assault causing harm and threatening to kill a woman.

The offences took place at the woman’s apartment in Grattan Wood, Balbriggan, Dublin 13, on 9 August 2022. Cooney also admitted threatening to kill or cause serious harm to Garda Patrick Griffin on the same occasion.

The judge set a four-year headline sentence, then reduced it to three years after considering Cooney’s early plea, remorse and significant medical issues. The final six months were suspended.

The court ordered Cooney to keep the peace and undergo probation supervision for one year after his release, and to attend addiction services if probation prescribed them.
