Neil Mannion’s cryptocurrency was ruled proceeds of crime by the High Court, reported on 18 December 2018. The ruling concerned 2,000 units of ether or ethereum worth about €25,000, found in an online wallet belonging to Mannion.
Ms Justice Carmel Stewart granted orders sought by the Criminal Assets Bureau after dismissing Mannion’s arguments that his rights had been breached during the investigation. The judge said his constitutional and legal rights were not breached, although the case raised questions about data privacy and cryptocurrency exchanges.
Mannion was serving a six-and-a-half-year prison sentence for drugs offences, including possession of LSD, amphetamine and cannabis resin with intent to sell or supply.
