Munster abuse trial uncles jailed for rape appeal convictions

By Fionn Kelly

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

The two unnamed uncles serving 15-year sentences for rape and abuse of child relatives had their conviction appeals reserved at the Court of Appeal, after hearings concluded on 10 April 2024.

The men were convicted following a 10-week trial at Croke Park in summer 2021; the jury foreman later sent a letter to the trial judge, whose contents remain subject to reporting restrictions.

The appeal concerned whether the convictions should be set aside over the juror’s letter and arguments about the trial judge’s directions and evidence admitted at trial. The three judges reserved their ruling, leaving the convictions in place pending that decision.

This report covers an earlier stage of the case. Later developments are not reported here.
