The Central Criminal Court jailed a mother and her brother for 15 years each after a jury convicted the mother of two sexual assaults and facilitating the rape of her daughter, and convicted her brother of raping the child. The offences included abuse when the child was four and the rape when she was six. Both sentences were backdated to when the offenders entered custody.

At sentencing, Justice Eileen Creedon set a 16-year headline sentence for each offender, then reduced each by a year. She said they continued to deny the charges and had shown no remorse or desire to rehabilitate. Both maintain their innocence and reject the jury’s verdict.

The judge commended the survivor’s bravery in speaking about the abuse, including her mother’s role. In her impact statement, the woman described the lasting effects of the abuse and said that telling the truth had helped her move from merely surviving to seeing herself as a survivor.
