A mother and her brother were each jailed for 15 years at the Central Criminal Court on 26 January, after the mother facilitated her brother’s rape of her young daughter and both were convicted of offences against the child.
The mother was sentenced for facilitating the rape and for two sexual assaults; her brother was sentenced for rape. The judge set a headline sentence of 16 years for each and backdated the 15-year terms to when each went into custody. Both continued to deny the offences and did not accept the jury’s verdict. A third defendant, accused of oral rape, faced no retrial after the DPP decided not to seek one.
