Miriam O'Callaghan gets permission to serve short notice of Facebook proceedings

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Miriam O'Callaghan secured permission from Ms Justice Leonie Reynolds at the High Court on 14 March 2019 to serve short notice of proceedings against Facebook Ireland Ltd seeking information about those who paid for skincare adverts.

The broadcaster claims the adverts used her name and image and falsely suggested she had left RTÉ's Prime Time to promote skincare products. The court heard that she had nothing to do with the adverts.

Her lawyers sought information that could identify those behind the adverts. She also wanted an injunction and damages and intended to bring proceedings against Facebook and the people behind the advertisements.

Permission was granted on an ex parte basis after the judge accepted the application was urgent. The matter was due to return before the court the following week.
