Michael Scott was found not guilty of murdering his aunt, Chrissie Treacy, but guilty of her manslaughter at the Central Criminal Court. The proceedings were reported on 30 March 2023.

Scott had pleaded not guilty to murder. He said Treacy’s death was a tragic accident. The jury returned its unanimous verdict after deliberating for more than 15 hours over five days.

Treacy, 76, was found near her home in Derryhiney, Portumna, on 27 April 2018 after being run over by a teleporter. The prosecution said Scott deliberately reversed over her following a land dispute; the defence said her death was an accident.

Ms Justice Caroline Biggs remanded Scott on bail until 12 June for sentencing. She described the verdict as gross negligence manslaughter and allowed him bail to put his affairs in order, while warning him not to expect continued liberty. He was to have no contact with witnesses and to observe the same bail terms and conditions.
