Michael Maughan was convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment at the Central Criminal Court, with the sentence handed down on 31 October 2014. He also received four years for assaulting Declan O’Dea, to run concurrently, with both sentences backdated to 24 July 2013 for time spent in custody.
Maughan had pleaded not guilty to murdering Piotr Nowakowski but guilty to manslaughter, a plea the prosecution did not accept. The jury found him guilty of both murder and assault after a one-week trial.
The court heard that Nowakowski was stabbed twice at Sandfield Mews, Ennis, on 23 July 2013, and later received further blows, including a kick to the head.
