Michael King jailed for sexual assault sentence cut on appeal

By Aoife Loughran

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Michael King was resentenced to five years’ imprisonment, with the final nine months suspended for two years, by the Court of Appeal on 15 February 2024.

The sentence concerned 12 counts of sexual assault on a girl who was 16 during the offending, which took place at locations in Roscommon.

The offending ended in September 2005; King was convicted by a jury after pleading not guilty to all 12 counts.

The appeal court said the consecutive sentences had produced an excessive and disproportionate cumulative sentence, and imposed a global sentence on the most serious count.
