Meta Ireland and WhatsApp Ireland granted permission to challenge €12m levy

By Cathal Brosnan

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

The High Court granted Meta Ireland and WhatsApp Ireland permission on February 16 to challenge the calculation of a €12 million levy set by Coimisiún na Meán. Justice Mary Rose Gearty allowed the companies to begin a judicial review after they argued there was insufficient transparency about how the fee was calculated. The proceedings were reported on February 20, 2026.

The companies also argued that they had been sent invoices rather than proper official notices and could not see how supervisory fees paid to the European Commission had been taken into account. The case was postponed until April.
