Mercy Peters deemed unfit to stand trial on murder charge

By Eimear Byrne

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Mercy Peters was deemed unfit to stand trial on a murder charge at the Central Criminal Court on 12 July 2017. She is charged with murdering Tyrone McKenna at a house they shared in Marley Court, Rathfarnham, Dublin, on 17 July 2014.

Mr Justice Tony Hunt said Ms Peters had an understanding of the criminal process beyond what would be expected of a lay person, but found that the strength of her delusional beliefs made her unfit to be tried.

The judge ordered her commitment to the Central Mental Hospital until 21 July 2017 and directed that an approved medical officer prepare a psychiatric assessment.

This report covers an earlier stage of the case. Later developments are not reported here.
