Meath man jailed for rape and sexual assault

A Meath man was sentenced at the Central Criminal Court to five years in prison, with the final three years suspended, for the rape and sexual assault of his younger sister. The proceedings were reported on 31 July 2018.

The offences occurred at their family farm and home between August 1987 and September 1988. A jury convicted him in March 2018 on two charges of sexual assault and one of rape.

Ms Justice Úna Ní Raifeartaigh said it was significant that he was a juvenile when the offending occurred. She said a psychological report had concluded that he was at low risk of reoffending and that his mental functioning was at a relatively low level.

The judge said post-release supervision was unnecessary because he had not come to garda attention since the offence. Following a defence submission, she recommended that he not serve his sentence in the same prison as his brother.
