Maurice McCabe’s corruption allegations were examined by the Charleton Tribunal. The proceedings were reported on 18 January 2018.
The tribunal heard that the allegations against garda officers were later withdrawn. Solicitor Annmarie Ryan said they had fallen away because there was no evidence to support them.
Michael McDowell SC, who represented McCabe at the tribunal, said the O’Higgins Commission had unreservedly accepted McCabe’s bona fides and called him “a man of integrity”.
The tribunal was examining whether then Garda Commissioner Nóirín O’Sullivan relied on unjustified grounds to discredit McCabe at the O’Higgins inquiry. The tribunal chairman said all parties appeared to agree that false sexual-abuse allegations had not been relied upon at that inquiry, while other grounds remained under examination.
