Maurice McCabe abuse allegations examined at tribunal

By Cathal Brosnan

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

The Disclosures Tribunal heard evidence concerning allegations about Sergeant Maurice McCabe on 4 July 2017, including from psychologist Laura Brophy. The tribunal was investigating whether State files were used in an alleged smear campaign against him.

The DPP decided not to bring charges in the case in 2007. Social worker Rhona Murphy said the case was formally closed in October 2007 after that decision, Ms D’s disengagement from the service and the completion of the child sexual abuse team’s assessment.

Brophy said a report she prepared after meeting an unnamed teenager included more serious allegations from an unrelated case. She said the error was discovered after a message on 14 May 2014 and that she contacted social services and Garda authorities.

She told the tribunal that she had not sent the report to Gardaí, although it might have been passed on by superiors. Her evidence was due to resume the following day.
